After the relief of getting our computer back had worn off,
we had to deal with the unpleasant fact that we seem to be
falling behind schedule. As loose as that word may seem for
retired folk, we do have to get back before mid-September
to take care of obligations. Because of this, we have decided
that today will be a commute day, which means freeways most
of the way.
As we had back down Interstate 75, we stopped at a pull off
to take a picture of the Mackinac Bridge (photo 1).
This was going to be the third time across that sucker in
as many days. Heck, I'm getting used to riding on steel grates
high above the water now. At the rest stop, we noticed some
Canadian Geese also heading in the same direction we were
(photo 2). At this time of year, to see so many geese
this far north, we were wondering which one of them had left
their computer in the motel and had to come back to Canada.
I feel for these fellas.
Michigan is a nice state, mainly flat but heavily forested
all along our route. So far, Michigan has to win the prize
for the worst roads we've been on. While we did find some
smooth sections, which we greatly appreciated, the bulk of
the roads we took were bumpy and uneven. This makes for an
uncomfortable ride, even on a Goldwing.
Having complained about the condition of the roads I should
also note that the freeways were amazingly clear of truck
traffic and, if you have to travel on freeways, these were
not bad. It was our second time in Michigan, counting the
day before yesterday, and we enjoyed the ride. We were averaging
about 60+ mph and making good time. We finally turned east
on I-26 and before the sun was in the late afternoon sky,
we were at Port Huron. OK, I'm going to be honest here, since
we were gong back into Canada anyway, we decided to go ahead
and cross the river now and stay in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada
tonight. Why, because it's cheaper. When you're spending every
night in a motel, saying a few bucks on the Canadian exchange,
starts to appeal to you.
Sarnia is a nice little city and after dinner we took a walk
around the motel and down to the waterfront area. There was
a private country club right behind the motel so I walked
into the open gate and took some pictures of the grounds in
the late afternoon sunlight (photos 3 & 4). There
were a couple of ladies practicing their golf swings and I
finished up and left. As Linda and I were walking over to
the waterfront, a police car came rolling into the parking
lot and over to the gate area where I had just been. I'm trying
to keep an open mind here but it sure seemed like they were
looking for someone.

As we meandered over to the waterfront area, I took some
pictures of the goings on (photos 5 & 6) and about
this time we heard someone doing a pretty good job of playing
country music. Linda dragged me towards the sound and we spent
an enjoyable evening listening to Borderline, a local country/western
band (photos 7 & 8). It did seem a kinda funny
hearing a local Canadian group belting out "Good ol"
Rocky Top, Rocky Top Tennessee!"
It turned out to be a good day. We made good time and enjoyed
the ride at the same time, and then finished the day listening
to country music. What more could you want? Tomorrow Toronto.
