The alarm goes off and we slowly pull ourselves out of bed.
Linda asks the crucial question, "Is the wind still blowing?"
I look outside the motel window and see the trees moving a
little but it's obvious that it's nowhere as strong as it
was yesterday. That's a good thing.
I-70 West has been our traveling companion for all of yesterday
and will continue to be so for a little while longer today.
The traffic is light and we make reasonable time through the
flatlands of eastern Colorado. When I become King, I'm drawing
up new state borders and this part of Colorado will be joined
to Kansas, and the eastern third of Kansas will be joined
to Missouri. We'll work out the details later.
About an hour into the ride, I-70 swings north towards Denver
and, since I don't want to go to Denver, we take SR 86, a
two-lane road that winds over hill and dell towards I-25 and
Castle Rock. Castle Rock is about 15 miles south of Highlands
Ranch, which is our day's destination. SR 86 becomes a real
pleasant motorcycle road and I recommend it to those of you
in the area. It's a nice change from the interstate.
This part of Colorado is a transition from the flatlands
we've been riding through, to the mountains yet to come. It
a series of foothills with some small rock formations, several
small farms, some trees, and lots of grassland. The road winds
to and fro, up and down, and at times I feel like I'm on one
of those carousels at the amusement park.
At long last we hit I-25 heading north towards SR 470 and
Highlands Ranch. Reality check! The traffic is heavy around
this area, which is still growing and building, and this coming
from folks who have been riding for the last two days on the
interstate. We've been to the area enough now to be able to
find our way to Steve's house without getting directions.
We pull into Steve and Pegs driveway and the day's ride is
over.
The next couple of days will be spent visiting our youngest
son and his family. I will include some pictures of our granddaughter
for those who are interested, and there will be no riding
for the next two days.
